EROTICA VERSUS PORNOGRAPHY

I think it's so interesting how life sometimes works out. The law of attraction is an incredible thing and here (once again) I will affirm that I really believe it works! A while ago I was asked by my fellow Peck and Call Girls to participate in a discussion (together with them and Delta of Venus) about the difference between erotica and pornography. For a while, I put this on the backburner, partly because I had just started a new podcast that was taking up most of my time, and partly because I felt that this is something that is important and deserving of my undivided attention. This is a topic that needs to be discussed at length and this short blog post might not even do it a tiny bit of justice, but I thought I'd write this down, anyway. I know from personal experience and conversations with many a people, that the majority of us don't really know the actual difference between erotica and pornography. What a shame. So, I'm going to tell you what I THINK the difference is - not what I know it is, because I don't know for sure and I don't want you to take my word as gospel... it could be different for everyone, but here is what I think - (also, I would like to formally apologize for my ADHD tonight so let me just step back for a second and take a quick moment to tell you how the law of attraction came into play into me finally getting to writing this post.) So, the other night I was lying in the tub - thinking about where my life was heading - the usual - contemplating getting one of those self-journals to finally learn to prioritize my hectic schedule. I thought about everything that I had yet to tick off my list of things to do (this blog post being one of them,) and lo and behold, while I am lying there wondering how I would get it all done... "PING,"... I get a text from a dear friend of mine, telling me about this incredible article of a woman called Frida Castelli, a self-proclaimed Italian artist, who had garnered up quite the following for herself on Instagram, by painting images of "spine-chilling erotica" for her lover who lives very, very far away. I looked at these incredibly sexually explicit paintings and for a moment I felt intense sadness, pain, but also pleasure - all at the same time! "What magic can this possibly be?" I asked myself. And, then it hit me... erotica is "feelings meet sexual artistic expression meets arousal." Not sure how much sense that makes to anyone reading this (read that again... now read it again, please, aaaaand, one more time,) but in my mind, I had found that Eureka moment I had been searching for, for quite some time now. I began analyzing the paintings - really looking at them, studying them, and then came to the conclusion that erotica essentially allows us to become aroused, (not only on a physical level,) but on a deep cerebral level, as well.

Now, as for porn, (and here you can take my word as truth,) it's a physical thing. Done. Don't even bother arguing that with me. Be honest with yourself here... once that high from watching a good old porno wears off and you drift off effortlessly, what image are you really left with? How many of you can really remember twenty minutes later what you had just watched and how long afterwards will your mind really dwell on that same image of that brunette being bukkake'd by ten German dudes? Please don't get me wrong and think that I am being all hoity-toity and advocating for erotica - not at all. In fact, I believe both erotica and pornography serve their own purpose - and good erotica and good pornography serve those purposes well - and in my honest opinion, they are so different that I now realize why it has taken me so long to write this. Porn and erotica almost can't be compared at all. Porn serves a physical purpose that is sometimes all a person needs for release, whereas erotica serves an emotional purpose which may (or may not) lead to an intense physical reaction. But, one thing we can state as fact, is that the brain remains to be the biggest sex organ of them all - and I bet you'll remember the anguish and lust in this picture here below for a much, much longer time than that adventurous Bukkake scene.
